DisplayLink Releases New Mac Driver Beta (1.6 Beta 3)

DisplayLink has released an updated beta of their version 1.6 Mac drivers, available for download from their Mac forums. This is the first update in quite a few months, so it’s a good sign for Mac users.

The main feature of the new beta are fixes for some problems experienced on resume from sleep.

In terms of our general recommendations for Macs and Plugable’s DisplayLink-based products, we still want to emphasize that all Mac drivers are of a beta/pre-release level of quality compared to the Windows products. They still 1) are incompatible with recent MacBook Pros with switching graphics 2) disable the USB ethernet interface on docking stations like our Plugable dock. 3) are too frequently broken or fixed by Apple’s OS X updates — Apple often seems to be changing driver interfaces in subtle ways that affect USB graphics.

We expect and hope that support from both DisplayLink and Apple will improve in time, and we’ll be able to recommend the combination without qualification. Until then, it’s good to see releases like this for incremental progress.

1.6 Beta 3 does seem to fix resume from sleep problem for UGA-2K-A.

Running Mac mini (2010) with 8GB RAM connected to three Apple ADC Cinema Displays (old, but excellent displays, using Mini Display Port, HDMI and UGA-2K-A with appropriate adapters to DVI, then connecting via Apple ADC ->DVI adapters). Sleep mode would not only kill the Plugable display, but also disable USB connected mouse and keyboard. Needed to manually push power button on Mini to toggle Sleep/Restart, or do a complete hard shutdown in order to revive the UGA-2K-A’s display and get mouse/keyboard function back.

On first few tests of letting Mini go to sleep automatically or selecting Sleep from under Apple Menu, both the Plugable-connected display AND USB mouse & keyboard appear to be working properly.

May have spoken too soon on 1.6 Beta 3 correcting resuming from sleep problem.

Mac is set to put both the displays and computer to sleep at 15 minutes. Left it alone for a few hours, and came back to see displays still ON and Mouse (Microsoft Wireless Intellimouse Explorer 2) & Keyboard (Apple extended) – both of which are plugged into USB connectors on 23″ Apple Cinema HD display being driven by Apple Mini Display port — to be dead.

Had to do a hard shutdown via the power button on the Mini.

Will reset Energy Saver preference to keep the computer ON, but put the displays to Sleep at 15:00 to see if that makes a difference. May be able to get around mouse and keyboard lockup if shifting to BT versions, but not sure if other USB devices will still be effected by what could be a continuing problem with Sleep.

1.6 Beta 3 release notes did not specify exactly what problems from Resume Sleep had been resolved, nor those which have also not be fixed. It looks like this isn’t yet solid, and that there are still glitches for both the displays and USB devices.

Thanks for these tests and updates, Tom! They are a big help to other users – understanding where DisplayLink’s betas are making progress, and where they’re still clearly lacking. Thank you!
