Ludicrous Speed: Plugable’s New Portable 480GB Thunderbolt™ 3 NVMe SSD Drive

Plugable has been a market leader in high performance Thunderbolt 3 peripherals. In 2016, we were the first to launch a Thunderbolt 3 Dual DisplayPort Graphics Adapter, followed by the first HDMI 2.0 version in 2017. Our Plugable TBT3-NVME480 480GB NVMe SSD drive hits performance levels not possible with external media before Thunderbolt 3. Based on the Phison E7 MLC controller, this SSD offers amazing speeds of up to 2400+ MB/sec read and 1200+ MB/sec write, all without the need for an external power connection. Packed into a compact aluminum chassis, this drive is perfect for uncompromising on-the-go storage. Weighing only 6.2oz and with a minimal profile of 108mm x 65mm x 14.5mm it can be tucked in a pocket or bag without hassle.

Intel Thunderbolt™ 3 technology offers blistering transfer speeds up to 40Gbps and is the perfect connection to take advantage of new storage technologies. Unlike traditional external storage solutions that are limited by the SATA III interface, NVMe technology allows solid state media to interface directly with your CPU via PCI Express, allowing vastly improved performance as well as lower latency and reduced CPU usage. With the TBT3-NVME480 external solid state drive, you can experience performance like never before, often as fast (or faster!) than your computer’s built-in storage, and roughly 5x faster than traditional SATA III solid state drives connected with USB 3.1 Gen 2.

Our benchmark testing with a Dell XPS 9370 with a full spec PCIe x4 lane Thunderbolt 3 connection has shown us massive performance numbers:

The Plugable TBT3-NVME480 is available immediately in the U.S. at the link below, with availability in Canada and Europe coming in the weeks ahead.

An important note that’s true of all Thunderbolt 3 devices: Although this drive will fit in any USB-C port, it’s a Thuderbolt 3 device. It will only work with Thunderbolt 3 ports, and not all USB-C ports are Thunderbolt 3 capable. So, for example, it will work on the 2016/2017 MacBook Pros with USB-C, but not the lower-end MacBooks with USB-C. Or, even more confusingly — on some Windows PCs, the USB-C ports on the laptop are a mix of Thunderbolt 3 and non-Thunderbolt capable ports. So just make sure you’re plugging into a Thunderbolt 3 port before buying this drive.

There are many Laptops, including mine, that doesn’t support thunderbolt. Could we use a thunderbolt drive on a USB 3 port with an adapter?
