Plugable Introduces the World’s First HDMI Switch with USB-C Input

We are excited to announce the world’s first HDMI switch with USB-C input! Share one display with up to 2 HDMI 2.0/1.4 and 1 USB-C input sources. The switch requires no drivers and supports Windows, macOS, Linux and Chrome OS computers as well as most media players and game consoles.

Our first entry into HDMI switches includes a USB-C input, an industry first, allowing current generation computers with USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 graphics output to be plugged directly to the switch using a supported USB-C cable, without the need for separate adapters. Single button easily cycles through input sources, and status LEDs indicate which input is active. Most HDMI and USB-C source devices will power the switch without external power, and we also include a USB cable that can be connected to any standard USB to power the switch if needed. In our testing even a Raspberry PI was fully capable of powering the switch with none of our tests requiring the addition power connection.

Supporting HDMI 2.0 and backwards compatible to previous HDMI standards, the HDMI-SC3 switch is capable of 4K UHD at 60Hz refresh rate and 8-bits per pixel color depth for the HDMI inputs and output to the display using supported devices and cables. DisplayPort 1.2 over USB-C is converted internally by the switch to HDMI and is also capable of 4K UHD at 60Hz refresh rate. All ports support audio pass through from the source device up to 8-channel LPCM, compressed audio, and HBR, 24-bit sample size, up to 192kHz sample rate.

USB-C connectivity requires the host system support USB Type-C DisplayPort Alternate Mode. Alternate Modes are new to USB Type-C and allow additional data types to be sent using the standard USB Type-C connection. Many manufacturers now include DisplayPort Alternate Mode on USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 ports on many or most of their new notebook systems including Apple, Dell and HP. For instance, the Apple MacBook Pro 2018 does not provide a HDMI output, but the Thunderbolt 3 ports support video output and can be connected to this switch using a USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 cable. Not all USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 ports can output video, and system manufacturers don’t always do a great job of conveying which features they’ve implemented. Please visit the HDMI-SC3 product page for more details.

The HDMI-SC3 HDMI Switch with USB-C is now available on and will be available soon in Canada, Europe, and Japan. For more information about this device please see our Plugable HDMI-SC3 product page.
