The Plugable SATADOCK-USB2-C1 provides a comprehensive USB 2.0 based solution for dealing with a wide variety of external storage media. Inexpensive raw SATA drives can be docked directly with no extra cables or power to connect.

The dock a single SATA drive dock slot on top, supporting SATA disks of any current size (48 bit addressing), with both 2.5″ and 3.5″ form-factors. 64 flash memory card types are supported with 4 slots, see below for table.

The dock also has two free USB 2.0 ports intended for connecting USB flash drives. Backup button provides automatic backup on Windows XP/Vista/Win7 only with included PCClone EX Lite software (no Mac or Linux software provided, but button is readable on Linux).

The dock is a standard multifunction USB 2.0 device with JMicron JM20329 USB to SATA controller, Alcor Micro AU6256 hub, and Alcor Micro AU6477 flash reader. Both the JMicron and Alcor Micro chips support the USB 2.0 Mass Storage Class specification.

Docks vs. Enclosures

Why buy a USB 2.0 docking station for raw SATA drives, instead of a drive that comes in its own USB 2.0 enclosure?

Buying a drive with its own enclosure today ties it to USB 2 (480Mbs), making it more difficult to move to USB 3 (4.8 Gbs). USB 3 makes full use of your SATA drive’s throughput, and products are hitting the mainstream in 2010.

With the Plugable USB 2 storage dock, you can get going today on your current USB 2 systems, and then just quickly swap your SATA hard drives over to a newer USB 3 dock when your systems are upgraded to USB 3.

*note* In order to support many card types with a few slots, orientation or alignment can vary. In particular, compact flash cards are orientated into the dock CF slot “upside down” (main label facing down). When correctly aligned, cards will slide gently into dock – avoid forcing card against pins.

The Plugable SATADOCK-USB2-C1 provides a hub and USB 2.0 Mass Storage Class compatible devices, which use existing drivers provided by Windows (XP and later), Mac (OS 9.X and higher), and most distros of Linux. Just plug in your dock power, the USB cable to your PC, and flip the power switch on your storage dock – the software you already have will do the rest in most cases.
