Plugable Introduces USB-C Mini Docking Station with 85W Power Delivery/Charging

Meet the Plugable UD-CAM, the newest addition to our award winning, best selling lineup of USB-C Docking Stations with Power Delivery. With a size under 4″x3.5″x1.25″ and the ability to provide 85W of charging power to compatible USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 host systems, it’s the smallest, most powerful USB 3.1 Type-C docking station available.

Power up your productivity with the ability to add a single HDMI display up to 4K (4K@30Hz, lower resolutions at 60Hz) while simultaneously providing up to 85W of power to charge your system and expanding your connectivity with gigabit Ethernet, headphone/mic jack, and four USB 3.0 ports to connect your peripherals. All through a single USB-C cable!

The Plugable UD-CAM dramatically increases the functionality, usability, and flexibility of supported USB-C systems like the 2015 and later 12″ MacBook Retina with USB-C, Late 2016/2017 MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt 3, Dell XPS 13″ & 15″, Precision, and Latitude systems with Thunderbolt 3, the Microsoft Surface Book 2, Lenovo Yoga 720 13″, Google Pixelbook, and more.

The functionality of the UD-CAM Mini Dock is powered by two of USB 3.1’s most exciting new features: support for Alternate Modes and Power Delivery. Alternate Mode allows certain non-USB data and protocols (such as native video) to be sent over a USB-C cable, while Power Delivery enables you to power and charge a supported system without the need for a traditional proprietary OEM charger. Support for these features must also be built-in to the system being used, so please see the important additional compatibility details on the UD-CAM product page.

The UD-CAM is available immediately in the U.S. at the link below, with availability in other geographies due in the months ahead.

Why not make the other 3 USB ports chargeable? It looks like right now I have to have the Macbook plugged-in for charging to take place besides that one port in the front.

    • Joshua Henry Reply

Due to power constraints of the main AC to DC adapter, enabling more than one USB-A port for charging would require a much larger and more expensive power adapter. Most users only need to charge one phone or tablet which the front port is designed for. The other ports should be used for things like a keyboard, mouse, etc.

I have a Dell XPS 13 and the plugable charges my PC directly to the USB C port.

If you could contact us directly at support@plugable.com, we would be more than happy to review your systems compatibility, as well as provide some troubleshooting instructions to see if we can get all of the individual connected components to work properly. I have two password protected back-up drives connected to my MacBook Pro through the mini docking station and the only problem I’m having is that if I close the MacBook it will loose the connection to the drives. When I reopen the MacBook it will tell me that the drives disconnected improperly. When I first got the dock it would disconnect improperly dozens of time while closed, but now it seems to just disconnect once and leave it at that. There is also a drive that is not password protected that does not seem to have any issues at all. Otherwise I love the dock, one cable to handle everything.

      Hi Paul,

Thank you so much for reaching out to us! I am sorry to hear that you are running into this issue. We have been currently following individual External HDD issues customers with macOS systems have been experiencing, that is not related to the individual hub or docking stations we manufacture, but instead related to faults in the operating system. If you have a moment, I would be happy to review your information and configuration to see if we can find a solution. Please feel free to reach out to us directly at support@plugable.com, when you have a moment.

Do you guys have any specs on the DAC in this unit? I’m using my HD600 headphones on them and i’m kinda impressed.

    • Marc M. Reply

      Hi Matthew,

Thank you so much for reaching out to us! I am so glad to hear that you are enjoying the sound capabilities of the UD-CAM. The UD-CAM utilizes a C-Media Audio IC/Dac in order to power the TRRS port. If you need any other more detailed information regarding the audio IC, please let me know and I would be happy to track it down.

It is compatible with Huawei MateBook intel m3 6th generation?
And if the Huawei tablet have USB Power Delivery to support 5 volts, 9 volts, and 12 volts all 2 amps. Will charge the tablet?

    • Marc M. Reply

      Hi Uri,

Thank you so much for reaching out to us! The UD-CAM is not compatible with the Huawei Matebook, due to the fact that it only supports USB 3.0 Type-C and not USB 3.1 Gen 2, which is required in order to provide Power Delivery and VESA Alt-Mode over the same USB-C based connection. I hope this information helps, if you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to us directly at support@plugable.com. Thank you!

Does this dock allow you to charge/operate the laptop while its closed?

    • Marc M. Reply

      Hi Cameron,

Thank you so much for reaching out to us, this is a great question! The UD-CAM will allow you to charge/operate the device with the lid closed, as long as you have modified the Power Management settings of the connected system to “Do Nothing” when the lid is closed, modified the Device Manager settings for the dock to “allow this device to wake system” and set the connected display on the dock the “Primary” so that all applications can open and be utilized on the connected display. I hope this information helps, if you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to us directly at support@plugable.com.

will this work with my Microsoft Surface Book 2, and charge through the type c 3.1 port? Thanks guys and gals. Lovu your products. Have a 3900 series for my Microsoft Surface Pro. But my wife liked it so much she confiscated it. Computer and all. So I have a Surface Book 2 I just purchased with the i7-8600U processor and 16GB memory. Nice, but need another Docking station. and I figure since this one has a 3.1 Type-C port. I Might as well utilize it. Running 420-460GBs down via the plugable 3900 through USB Type A 3.0 port. Just so ya know. impressive indeed. Curious if 3.1 Port fuel injection will do any better. either way…. I want it! Mark Reeves and the Tech Truth… on Amazon.

      Hi Mark,

Thank you so much for reaching out to us! I would be more than happy to answer your questions. When the Surface Book 2 was released, it was one of the first systems we throughly tested with our UD-CAM before it was released. It does support Power Delivery at 85W, and allows for an external display to be connected. It is a great pairing for Microsoft Surface Book 2 systems. I hope this information helps, we are so happy to hear that you are enjoying our products, but if you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to us directly at support@plugable.com. I do hope you will release a version of this with dual display ports so that you can run 2 x 4k monitors @ 60 hz so I can upgrade from the Dual Displayport USB-C adapter to this (and go from 3 cables into the laptop down to 1).

Arguably the only other nice to have would be a USB-C port on the front and you have the perfect dock for a laptop.

      Hi Chris,

Thank you so much for reaching out to us! This is a great idea, and we agree! We currently have the USB-C UD-ULTC4K Triple Display Docking station that provides 60W of Power Delivery, allows for two DisplayPort based displays to be connected at 4K@60Hz and 1 additional display via HDMI at 4K@30Hz. You can read more about it here -> http://www.plugable.com/products/ud-ultc4K. Hi Marc, looks like a great product – but it’s not quite for me. Main issues are a) I want the display ports to use USB-C and not displaylink. A 3rd monitor over HDMI perhaps that used displaylink could be useful; but is not what I’m really worried about. b) the power delivery is too low for e.g. a dell xps 15, and c) that product is not in my market (UK). I do also prefer the square form factor you’ve got for this product above but that’s the least important thing from the list.

The absolute perfect product would be something you can mount behind a monitor e.g. we have monitor arms so need an adapter a between the arm and monitor (like dell make for the NUCs). You can then plug single cable from that into laptop and everything works from that with the monitor (and plugable box) providing all the ports and cable management you need.

I’ve had this for a few months. Works well overall, but I am out of USB ports. 4 USB ports with only one charging is not enough for professional use. I have a headset charger, Jabra Speak, Headset BT, iPhone charger plugged in, and I have no space left for a tablet.

I would like to use this for 2 or possibly 3 bus powered portable HDDs. Is there any problem with insufficient power, randomly unmounting the drive, etc in this?

    • Marc M. Reply

      Hi There,

Thank you so much for reaching out to us! This is a great question. There is a relation between how many drives are connected, the amount of power they consume and require when transferring from one to another, and also how some OS’s communicate and connect to external drivers connected via hubs. We have seen Windows Users utilize the UD-CAM with no difficulties or issues when connecting bus powered portable hard drives that fell within the available power abilities of the hub inside of the dock. There is also a known issue with third party hubs (by all manufacturers outside of Apple) inside of macOS High Sierra and Sierra, where disconnections and mounting issues occurred when users were sleeping or waking the system. We have been following this as closely as possible, but have seen know correction or fixes implemented in any of the recent updates by Apple.

I hope this information helps, if you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to us directly at support@plugable.com, and we would be more than happy to assist.

Thanks. That is helpful. I think I have seen the Apple issue on one of the other MacBooks in my household but so far I’ve been safe. Since this one has more power than the CA1A, would you recommend this one more highly since it has more power?

        • Marc M. Reply

          Hi There,

No problem, I am glad this information helped! We do find that customers prefer the larger available power requirements of the UD-CAM, as most Macbook systems needs between 85-87W in order to stay fully charged while connected to a power source. I also enjoy the additional BC 1.2 USB 3.0 charging port that is on the front of the UD-CAM, and the expanded capability of the VESA Mount system that is included with the UD-CAM (Allows you to mount the dock to the back of a display or bracket to keep it out of the way).

I hope this information helps, if you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to us directly at support@plugable.com, and we would be more than happy to assist.

Update: This has been happily purring away for nearly 3 weeks with 2 USB drives attached. Such a great device !
I am using a software to manage hard drives on sleep to avoid the “not ejected properly” errors.

I recently installed a UD-CAM dock and I am very pleased with it. I had a technical glitch with the device (which may have been more on my end and not theirs) but they resolved it quickly, easily and to my satisfaction. This device does everything I need it to: it charges my Dell XPS 13 laptop, has USBs for my mouse, speakers and to charge my IPad & IPhone and an ethernet connection for the internet. I connected this morning at 592 mbps download and 829 mbps upload through this dock. All this connects to my laptop through one Thunderbolt 3 cable – talk about simplicity. And, for $119, it is less than half of the cost of some of the other options. What a great find. Thanks guys.
