Product Description

Meet Plugable’s smallest USB-C docking station yet — the UD-CUBE. Extend the connectivity and usability of your USB-C system with the mobile UD-CUBE that fits in the palm of your hand. Drive an external HDMI display while having access to three USB ports for your USB peripherals such as a mouse and keyboard and a wired gigabit Ethernet connection.

The display functionality of the UD-CUBE dock is powered by one of USB 3.1’s most exciting new features: support for Alternate Mode (Alt Mode) video. Alternate Modes allow certain non-USB data and protocols (such as native video) to be sent over a USB-C cable, so you don’t need a separate video cable running to your system. Instead, the UD-CUBE enables you to connect your HDMI display directly to the dock and enjoy native level display performances up to the host system’s graphics capabilities.

Another exciting feature is that the Cube is designed to function both self-powered with the included power adapter or bus-powered by the host computer’s USB-C port (no power adapter needed). This makes it beautifully functional both on the desk and optionally on the road. Please note that in exchange for this flexibility, the Cube will not charge your laptop. Please see more details about host charging in our Important Note About Host Charging section.

  • Supports a single HDMI display for mirroring or extending your desktop with resolutions up to 4K@30Hz, 2560×1440@60Hz & 1920×1080/1080P@60Hz
  • Compact size with detachable USB-C cable making it ideal for clutterless workstations while portable for travel
  • Three total USB Type-A ports; One USB 3.0 port and two USB 2.0 ports on the rear
  • Wired gigabit network connectivity via one RJ45 Ethernet port
  • Plug and Play with no driver installation needed

Compatibility Chart

The core factor that determines whether or not a host system will be compatible with the UD-CUBE is if the system has a USB-C 3.1 Gen 1 / Gen 2 port that supports USB-C DisplayPort Alternate Mode (Alt Mode). Alternatively, a system with a Thunderbolt 3 port should also be compatible. Alt Mode video support must be built-in to the USB-C port on the host system in order for the HDMI display to function properly through the dock, so if your system isn’t listed below, please check with your system manual to confirm this or contact us at

Important Note About Host Charging

The UD-CUBE docking station will not charge your connected host laptop. You will need to keep the original power adapter connected to the system in order charge it.

It may appear that the UD-CUBE is charging your computer, as you may see some charging indicator upon connecting your computer to the Cube. While the Cube does provide 15W of power back to the host system, this is not enough to keep the laptop charged under normal use. Please make sure to keep the original laptop power adapter connected for charging.

A: No. While the UD-CUBE does provide up to 15W over USB-C, this is not enough for computers to maintain their power usage and therefore you will need to keep the original power adapter attached. If charging is required, our UD-CAM is a similar USB-C docking station option to the UD-CUBE.

A: Depending whether or not your computer supports charging through its USB-C port, you may see an indication that your system is charging when docked. However, the 15W of power is not enough to charge your system while it is in use. Please make sure to keep your original power adapter connected.

A: The dimensions for the UD-CUBE measure up to 6.4 x 5.8 x 3.5 cm (2.5 x 2.3 x 1.4 in).

A: The first step you’ll want to check is to ensure that the HDMI video input is selected on your monitor. If that fails, we’ll want to make sure that the USB-C port on your laptop computer supports Alternate Mode video by referring to your system manual. Please feel free to contact us at with your system model and we’d be happy to help investigate.

A: No. Since the HDMI port complies with HDMI 1.4, 4K (3840×2160) is only achievable at 30Hz. However, 2560×1440 and all lower resolutions will display at 60Hz.

A: No, the LED is powered on when it is connected to a power source and cannot be turned off unless this power source is removed.

A: Yes, but while the UD-CUBE can be used “bus-powered” (no power adapter), we do not recommend this especially if you are actively using all three USB ports on the dock.

A: While the UD-CUBE only supports a single HDMI display, another monitor can be added through the use of our USB 3.0 Graphics Adapter (UGA-3000).

A: No, the UD-CUBE is not equipped with 3.5 mm jacks for microphones or headphones. If necessary, our USB audio adapter (USB-AUDIO) could be used, but our other docking stations such as the UD-CAM may be a better option.

A: Don’t panic! Please don’t hesitate to contact us directly at and we’d glad to answer your question.
