Understanding the Limitation

Google Pixel phones are limited by the Android operating system’s handling of external displays. While many Pixel models (such as the Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 series) support USB-C DisplayPort Alternate Mode, they can only output to a single external display at a time. Android is designed primarily for screen mirroring, and extended display support is extremely limited across Android phones.

Dock Behavior with Pixel Phones

MST Docks (e.g., Plugable UD-MSTH2)

MST (Multi-Stream Transport) requires the host device to support splitting one DisplayPort signal into multiple independent video streams. While common on Windows and many Chromebooks, Pixel phones do not support MST for extended displays.

When using an MST dock, a Pixel phone will:

• Output to one external display only, or
• Mirror the same content to two connected monitors
• Dual extended desktops are not supported

DisplayLink Docks

DisplayLink technology works on Android through a companion app (e.g., DisplayLink Presenter). However:

• Android only supports a single external display via DisplayLink
• DisplayLink docks cannot be used to achieve multiple extended monitors from a Pixel device
• DisplayLink is not recommended for dual display use on Android

Thunderbolt Docks

Google Pixel phones are not Thunderbolt-certified hosts. When connected to a Thunderbolt dock:

No. Most DisplayPort to HDMI cables and adapters are one-way adapters from a DisplayPort Source (computer or docking station) to a HDMI Sink (television, computer monitor, or projector). These cables do not work in reverse.

Why is DisplayPort to HDMI often a one-way conversion?

DisplayPort uses packet-based data transmission, breaking the video stream into individual packets of data allows for longer cable runs, use in both copper and fiber-optic cables, and allows for higher bandwidth than other video formats. It is relatively easy to convert from DisplayPort to HDMI (computers with HDMI output ports already do this internally) and dual-mode DisplayPort outputs (DP++) have built-in adapters to output a HDMI signal for use with passive DisplayPort to HDMI adapters.

HDMI historically uses a Transmission-Minimized Differential Signaling (TDMS) video signal originally based on DVI's signal, this requires more power to operate at the same cable lengths as DisplayPort and requires significantly more processing power to convert from HDMI to DisplayPort packet-based data. The latest HDMI specifications enable the new Fixed Rate Link (FRL) which is packet based similar to but not directly compatible with DisplayPort.

Externally powered HDMI to DisplayPort adapters do exist, these generally have a USB or small barrel plug for power, and can convert from a HDMI Source to DisplayPort Sink. In most cases they have reduced resolution or refresh rates compared to modern signal sources and can introduce delay in the data connection between the display and computer potentially causing reduced connectivity or display performance problems.

We do not currently recommend using HDMI to DisplayPort adapter with our docking stations. In our testing they have been unreliable compared to a native DisplayPort connection. Many of our newer docking stations include both HDMI and DisplayPort outputs to reduce the need for additional adapters or adapter cables.

Windows defaults to putting the computer to sleep when the lid is closed, even if there are external displays and devices connected, we can change this setting to enable closing the lid while using a docking station.

Recommended Setup

To ensure the computer can reliably function with the lid closed there are some requirements and recommendations:

1. The system should be powered: This can be from a USB Type-C Docking Station with host charging, or by connecting the laptop's original power source.
2. There should be at least one external display connected, this can be through a docking station, or directly to the computer.
3. There should be a keyboard and mouse connected, either through a docking station, USB Hub, or directly to the computer.

Windows 11 24H2 and Newer

1. Right-click on the Start menu and select Power Options from the context menu

Windows 11 23H2 and Earlier

Windows 10

1. Start by right-clicking on the Start button and select Power Options from the menu.

Closing the lid should no longer put the computer into sleep mode when an external display and power source is connected, instead one of the external displays should now become the Primary display with the desktop icons instead of the laptop's built-in display.

When to open the lid?

The laptop lid may still need to be opened when performing any of the following:

• To power on the computer from a fully powered off state
• To log into the computer if logged out or if the computer is restarted with the lid closed
• To wake the computer from a deep sleep state (hibernation, or Windows hybrid sleep states)

With the release of USB-C on iPhone 15 / 16 / 17, certain models such as the Pro and Max trims can play HDR and Dolby Vision content using a Plugable USB-C to HDMI adapter. 

Within the iPhone settings menu it is possible to adjust the preferred display settings by navigating through these following steps:

1.  Navigate to the Settings app
2.  Scroll down to Display & Brightness

3.  Select the external display in the Displays sub-menu

4.  Select the appropriate display setting based on the content you intend to watch such as Dolby Vision, High Dynamic Range (HDR), or Standard Dynamic Range (SDR)
   1.  Not all displays support HDR or Dolby Vision, if this option is missing it indicates the display does not support that display setting.
   2.  If preferred, you can enable Allow Display Mode Changes to automatically adjust the display settings based on the content you are viewing but this can cause temporary no video signal or display flickering

If your system supports multiple displays Thunderbolt or USB-C Alt Mode outputs, then you will be able to use multiple adapters on one system to connect to these displays. Not all systems can support multiple native displays, so consult your host's specifications to see if multiple displays are supported.

Most modern MacBooks with USB-C, USB4, or Thunderbolt 3/4 ports support Alt Mode-based video adapters, making them compatible with Plugable Alt Mode video adapters. This includes:

Setting the Display Refresh Rate in Windows 11

1. Right-click on the desktop and select Display Settings from the drop-down menu

2. Scroll down to the Related settings subsection and select Advanced display

3. At the top of the Advanced display window, select the display you want to configure from the drop-down menu.

4. From the Choose a refresh rate drop-down menu select the desired refresh rate

If the Desired Refresh Rate Is Not Listed

If the desired refresh rate is not available, confirm that the display, computer or graphics hardware, docking station or adapter, and video cable all support the desired resolution and refresh rate combination.

Some devices may support a higher refresh rate only at a lower display resolution. Check the specifications for each component in the display connection to confirm the supported resolution and refresh rate combinations.

Refresh Rate Limitations

Windows 11 may display an asterisk (*) next to certain refresh rates in Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. The asterisk indicates that the selected refresh rate is not supported at the display's current resolution. Selecting one of these refresh rates will cause Windows to change the display resolution in order to achieve the selected refresh rate.

In the example below, the display supports 3840 × 2160 (4K UHD) at 60Hz and 2560 × 1440 (1440p) at 120Hz through the connected hardware. After selecting “120 Hz*”, Windows changes the display resolution from 3840 × 2160 to 2560 × 1440 so that the higher refresh rate can be used. Because the display is now operating at a lower resolution, the image may appear less sharp than when using the display's native 4K resolution. After selecting a lower refresh rate, Windows may retain the reduced display resolution. If the original resolution is not restored automatically, return to Settings > System > Display and manually select the desired resolution.

Dynamic Refresh Rate

Windows 11 also supports Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) on compatible hardware. When enabled, Windows can automatically adjust the display refresh rate based on what you are doing to provide smoother motion when needed while helping reduce power consumption at other times.

DRR requires a display that supports Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and a refresh rate of at least 120Hz. If supported by the computer and display, DRR can be enabled or disabled under Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.

Apple's M1, M2, M3, M4 and M5 chips deliver high performance, but each generation has unique capabilities for supporting external displays via the system’s Thunderbolt ports. This article explains how many displays each chip can support while directly connected to the laptop, and will assist you in identifying if a software solution (DisplayLink, InstantView, etc.) is needed. This article largely applies to the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models. Other Apple models, such as the Mac Mini and iMac may have similar display restrictions, but always check your specific device's documentation for confirmation.

Important Note: Native Display Limits

Even if you connect a Thunderbolt dock or adapter, extended displays cannot exceed what is natively supported by the Thunderbolt ports on your Mac device.

• Example: A MacBook with a base M1 or M2 CPU supports only one external display via Thunderbolt. Adding a Thunderbolt dock will not increase this limit due to hardware constraints.
• In several cases of the ‘Max’ variation of CPU, multiple Thunderbol ports must be used in order to connect mutliple displays. This can be done utilizing all Thunderbolt ports for a single display, or using a Thunderbolt dock to connect up to two of the displays.
• Plugable offers alternative solutions, such as USB DisplayLink technology-based docks and adapters, which allow for additional displays on devices with limited native support. This technology combines software and hardware to send video signals over USB data connections.

Common USB-C Video Output Technologies

Modern laptops commonly use one or more of the following technologies to transmit video to external monitors:

Thunderbolt and USB4

• DisplayPort Tunneling: DisplayPort video data packets are transmitted within Thunderbolt/USB4 data packets from the computer to a Thunderbolt or USB4 docking station, graphics adapter or display.
• Multi-Display supported resolutions
  • Thunderbolt 3 enables up to two DisplayPort 1.2 streams, supporting up to two 4K 60Hz external displays.
  • Thunderbolt 4 & USB4 enables two DisplayPort 1.4 streams, supporting a single 8K display, or upto two 4K 60Hz displays

When connecting a laptop/dock to a monitor, the right direction matters. Many “converter” cables only work one way. If the cable's intended direction doesn't match your source (video output) and display (video input), you'll get no signal. Even if the connectors fit.

Resolution, refresh, and features

• Available resolution/refresh (e.g., 4K60) depends on source + cable/adapter + display
• Features like HDR, HDCP, and VRR may require specific active adapters and sufficient bandwidth
• For long cable runs, signal redrivers may be required. Active adapters may have reduced cable length, for example DisplayPort sources provide about 50 percent of the power of a HDMI source. DisplayPort signals are more efficient than HDMI and require less power for the same cable length. When converting to HDMI the overall cable length will be less than a native HDMI source.

Why doesn't my "DP to HDMI" cable work from an HDMI laptop to a DP monitor?

Mot likely it is a uni-directional (DP to HDMI) cable. Most adapter cables (DisplayPort Plug to HDMI Plug) are passive uni-directional cables, while most adapters (DisplayPort Plug to HDMI Socket) are uni-directional active or passive adapters.

My desktop video cards has one HDMI and three DisplayPort outputs. To enable four HDMI displays do I need passive or active adatpers?

Most graphics cards can support a native HDMI and single Passive DisplayPort to HDMI display, in the graphics card itself there are normally two DisplayPort to HDMI adapter chipset, one dedicatd to the HDMI port, the second available for a single passive adpater. For enabling four HDMI displays we recommend either three active, or two active and one passive adapters/adapter cables.

Why aren't most DisplayPort (source) adapters bi-directional?

DisplayPort data is transmitted in discrete data packets, this makes DisplayPort the most flexible video standard (for example tunneling in Thunderbolt, or converting to other display types). However converting from a non-packet based video stream to packets requires more comptational power, many early HDMI to DisplayPort (uni-directional) adapters required a separate 5V power source - often USB. While some modern adapters can utilize the HDMI or DisplayPort source power, these often have limited (6ft/2m) cable lengths.

When connected to a compatible USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode hub or video adapter, the Pixel can drive a monitor and support peripherals such as a keyboard, mouse, Ethernet, and storage devices.

This article explains device requirements, compatible Plugable products, expected display behavior, and common troubleshooting steps.

Scope

This article applies only to Plugable USB-C hubs and video adapters that rely on DisplayPort Alt Mode.

This article does not apply to:

• DisplayLink-based docking stations (such as UD-3900 series)
• Wireless screen casting
• Charge-only USB-C cables
• Pixel devices without DisplayPort Alt Mode support

Requirements

1. Supported Pixel Device

Desktop Mode requires a Pixel device that supports DisplayPort Alt Mode over USB-C.

• Pixel 8 series and newer Pixel models that include DisplayPort Alt Mode are required.
• Earlier Pixel models without DP Alt Mode cannot output video to an external display.
• Desktop Mode for external displays requires Android 16 QPR1 Beta (or newer builds that include the connected display desktop feature).
• The Desktop Experience feature must be enabled in Developer Options.

Note: Android 16 Desktop Mode is currently evolving and behavior may change in future Android updates. Google does not currently publish a detailed external display resolution and refresh rate compatibility matrix for Pixel phones, so actual results can vary by phone model, Android build, monitor, cable, adapter, and connection path.

2. Enable Desktop Mode

Enable Developer Options

1. Go to Settings > About phone
2. Tap Build number seven times
3. Confirm Developer Options have been enabled

Enable Desktop Experience

1. Go to Settings > System > Developer options
2. Scroll to the Window management section
3. Enable Desktop experience features

Optional (recommended for better app behavior):

• Enable Force activities to be resizable and Enable non-resizable in multi-window

If Desktop Mode does not activate after enabling these settings, restart the phone before connecting to the external display.

3. Choosing a Hub or Adapter

The following Plugable USB-C DP Alt Mode hubs are compatible:

• USBC-4IN1
• USBC-7IN1
• USBC-7IN1E
• USBC-9IN1E
• UDS-7IN1

The following Plugable USB-C video adapters and cables are compatible:

• USBC-HDMI
• USBC-HDMI-CABLE
• USBC-DP
• USBC-TDP

No drivers are required.

Expected Display Behavior

When properly configured, Android Desktop Mode launches a desktop-style interface on the external display that includes:

• Resizable app windows
• Taskbar with pinned and recent apps
• Keyboard and mouse support
• Independent external workspace while the phone screen remains active

Actual resolution and refresh rate depend on:

• Pixel hardware capabilities
• Overall connection path bandwidth
• Monitor capability
• Cable quality
• Display settings

Important: Plugable hubs and adapters do not determine the final external display resolution or refresh rate. While some Plugable products support up to 4K 60Hz with compatible hosts, Google Pixel phones currently do not support 4K 60Hz in this use case. Actual display behavior depends on the Pixel device, Android build, monitor, cable, and full connection path.

Troubleshooting

External Display Stays Black

Possible causes:

• Pixel device does not support DisplayPort Alt Mode
• Desktop Mode not enabled in Developer Options
• Using a charge-only USB-C cable
• Hub or adapter does not support DP Alt Mode
• Android build does not include Desktop Mode support

Steps:

1. Verify Pixel model supports DP Alt Mode
2. Confirm Android version (Android 16 QPR1 Beta or newer build required)
3. Confirm Desktop Experience is enabled
4. Test with a known-good USB-C DP Alt Mode cable or adapter
5. Restart the phone and reconnect

Display Flickers or Blanks

Possible causes:

• Low-quality HDMI cable
• Monitor input mode not set to high bandwidth
• Hub not receiving power
• HDR or variable refresh rate enabled

Steps:

1. Use a certified HDMI 2.0 cable
2. Set monitor input to HDMI 2.0 / Enhanced mode
3. Connect USB-C power passthrough to the hub
4. Disable HDR or variable refresh rate features
5. Power cycle the monitor and hub

Resolution or Refresh Rate Lower Than Expected

Steps:

1. Confirm monitor input is set to enhanced or HDMI 2.0 mode
2. Test with a shorter or higher-quality HDMI cable
3. Disconnect high-speed USB devices from the hub
4. Lower resolution to test stability
5. Confirm Android build supports Desktop Mode

Important: Current Pixel phones may offer only display modes such as 1920 x 1080 or 2560 x 1440 in many setups. This does not indicate a problem with the Plugable hub or adapter. External display resolution and refresh rate are negotiated by the Pixel and the connected display path.

Current Limitations of Android Desktop Mode

Android Desktop Mode is still evolving and may include:

• Occasional connection instability
• App scaling inconsistencies
• Some apps forcing full-screen mode
• Limited desktop-level system controls
• Notifications and certain settings remaining on the phone display
• Resolution and refresh rate limitations that vary by Pixel model, Android build, and connected display

These behaviors are software-related and not caused by the Plugable hub or adapter.

Important Notes

• Plugable USB-C hubs listed in this article use DisplayPort Alt Mode and do not use DisplayLink technology.
• DisplayLink-based docks are not supported for Android Desktop Mode.
• A hub cannot enable video output if the Pixel device does not support DisplayPort Alt Mode.
• Behavior may change as Android Desktop Mode continues to mature.

Up to date graphics drivers are necessary for ensuring the best performance of your computer's built-in display, as well as the capability and compatibility with external displays and docking stations.

Windows has a built-in system update service: Windows Update, however this may not provide up to date drivers or timely updates. We often see systems with out of date drivers, in some cases systems may not receive updated graphics drivers for months or even years, leaving the computer with drivers incompatible with the installed version of Windows 11.

However, we can manually update the graphics drivers to ensure the best possible performance, reliability, and compatibility.

The first step is to identify the graphics hardware, then downloading, and installing the latest drivers.

Identifying Graphics Controller

For notebooks and many desktop computers, the primary graphics controller is embedded in the processor, both AMD and Intel provide graphics driver updates based on the processor model, as well as for discrete graphics controllers. Our first step is to identify up the processor or graphics hardware model details:

1. Right-click on the Start Menu and select Settings from the pop-up menu
2. From the left column select System and from the bottom of the right side select About
3. From the top of the about page the processor details will be on the right side, and duplicated lower down on the page.
   
4. In this example the processor is a 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1260P, we'll keep that detail for the next step.

If your computer has two graphics controllers (it may show "Multiple GPUs Installed" under Graphics Card) then we can get the graphics card model details from the Windows System Information Utility.

1. Open the Start menu and search for "msinfo32"
2. Select the first result
3. From the left-column expand the Components section, then select Display
   
4. In this example the Intel Iris(R) Xe Graphics is enabled by the processor, while the Intel(R) Arc(TM) Pro B60 Graphics is a discrete graphics controller.

Downloading the Drivers

Intel Graphics

1. In a web browser navigate to the Intel Driver Download Page
2. In the "Search Drivers & Software" field, search for the Intel graphics card model or CPU model, "Arc Pro B60" in this example
   
3. Select the appropriate "Intel Arc Pro Graphics - Windows" or similar entry from the search results, for modern hardware Intel will normally have at least one release per month, the list should return recent results within the last month
4. Select the Download button to save the installer to your Downloads folder or selected location

AMD Graphics

AMD provides an Auto-Detect utility, this works relatively well and can be used to update the system available from the AMD Drivers and Support page.

This page also provides a search and browse option for finding drivers and specific compatibility details, we'll look up the drivers for an AMD Ryzen Pro 5650U processor with Radeon Graphics:

1. Navigate to AMD Drivers and Support page
2. From the Browse section, fill out the processor details and click the Submit button
   
3. Expand the "Windows 11 - 64-Bit Edition" section and select the Download button for the latest graphics drivers

NVIDIA Graphics

Like AMD, NVIDIA provides an automatic installation utility, as well as a Manual Driver Search on the NVIDIA Drivers support page. We will look up the drivers for an NVIDIA RTX 5080 graphics card.

1. Navigate to NVIDIA Drivers support page
2. Fill out the Manual Driver Search drop-downs and select the "Find" button when complete
   
3. From the search results, select the "View" button for the GeForce Game Ready Driver or NVIDIA Studio Driver (if you need the studio driver features)
4. Select the green Download button for the latest graphics drivers

Installing the Graphics Drivers

For the most part this is relatively simple, we recommend disconnecting any external docking stations or devices that are not necessary for the driver installation, and for notebook computers connecting the system's original power supply.

Double-click on the downloaded driver installation executable and follow the on screen steps.

Download the drivers for your GPU or Processor Graphics

1. In a web browser navigate to the Intel Driver Download Page
2. In the Search Drivers & Software field, search for the Intel graphics card model or CPU model, "Arc Pro B60" in this example
3. Select the appropriate Intel Arc Pro Graphics - Windows or similar entry from the search results, for modern hardware Intel will normally have at least one release per month, the list should return recent results within the last month
4. Select the Download button to save the installer to your Downloads folder or selected location

Install the Intel Graphics Driver

To update the Intel Graphics Drivers to the latest version from Intel's website:

1. Save and close any open applications
2. Navigate to the downloaded graphics driver, then right-click on the saved driver installation file and select Run as administrator to start the installation process
3. Allow the Intel driver installation through the User account control window, the drivers will be extracted
   
4. When the extraction is complete select the Begin installation button
   
5. Agree to the Intel Software License Agreement by selecting the I agree button
   
6. Ensure all applications are saved and closed before selecting the I agree button
   
7. For most installations, we recommend not selecting the Execute a clean installation checkbox. This option will remove previous driver versions and can lead to Windows Update reverting to an even older graphics driver. Select the Start button to proceed
   
8. The installation process will proceed, but can take some time to complete
   
9. When the installation has completed, deselect the Launch Intel Graphics Software checkbox - we don't need that right now, select the Reboot Now button to restart the computer applying the new graphics drivers
   

Windows should now detect the Intel Graphics Controller in the Device Manager and show the latest drivers.

Download the drivers for your GPU or Processor Graphics

1. In a web browser navigate to the AMD Drivers and Support page
2. In the Search for your AMD product field, type in the model name, for example “RX 5600XT” for the AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT graphics controller, or a processor model like "AI 9 365", then select the best fitting result and select the Search button - note: Searching for a processor the "™" is required, so I recommend searching for the text after that symbol.
   
3. On the results page, expand the section for Windows 11 64-bit then select the Download button for the latest AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition drivers, AMD may not provide a direct download for all hardware, in that case use the Auto-Detect and Install option
4. Save the installer to your Downloads folder or selected location

Install the AMD Graphics Driver

To update the AMD Graphics Drivers to the latest version from AMD’s website:

1. Save and close any open applications
2. Navigate to the downloaded graphics driver, then right-click on the saved driver installation file and select Run as administrator to start the installation process
3. Allow the Intel driver installation through the User account control window, the drivers will be extracted
   
4. For most users the express installation is fine, ensure all applications are saved and closed selecting the Accept & Express Install button. If you have been having issues with older graphics drivers causing crashes or errors the Factory Reset (Optional) checkbox may be selected, but it isn’t necessary for most installations.
   
5. The installation will proceed, the displays may flicker or flash off/on while the drivers are installing.
   
6. When complete you will be prompted to Launch AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition and Keep AMD software up to date, you can uncheck the Launch AMD Software option
   
7. Restart the computer to ensure the latest drivers are loaded from boot Start Menu > Power Icon > Restart

Windows should now detect the Intel Graphics Controller in the Device Manager and show the latest drivers.

Download the drivers for your GPU

Check your invoice for the specific model of NVIDIA graphics card, for this example we will use the RTX 5080 (the manufacturer is not relevant).

1. In a web browser navigate to the NVIDIA Driver Download Page
2. In the Manual Driver Search field, search for the NVIDIA graphics card model, "RTX 5080" in this example
3. Select the GeForce RTX 50 Series | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 | Windows 11 entry from the list
4. Left-click the Find button
5. Select either View buttons from the GeForce Game Ready Driver or NVIDIA Studio Driver
6. Select the Download button to save the installer to your Downloads folder or selected location

Install the NVIDIA Graphics Driver

To update the NVIDIA Graphics Drivers to the latest version from NVIDIA's website:

1. Save and close any open applications
2. Navigate to the downloaded graphics driver, then right-click on the saved driver installation file and select Run as administrator to start the installation process
3. Allow the NVIDIA driver installation through the User account control window
4. Click OK to extract the NVIDIA Display Driver package contents
   
5. At the System Check step, select either the NVIDIA Graphics Driver with NVIDIA App or the NVIDIA Graphics Driver alone, the NVIDIA App is gaming oriented and unnecessary for most users. Select AGREE AND CONTINUE
   
6. At the License Agreement step, select the Express (Recommended) radio button then select NEXT to continue
   
7. The installation will take some time to complete
   
8. When complete please restart the computer Start > Power > Restart
   

Windows should now detect the NVIDIA Graphics Controller in the Device Manager and show the latest drivers.
